Why Vegan?

Hey Hi Hello! Chances are if you are here, you’re a vegan wanting to know more, a meat eater hoping to educate yourself, or someone trying to start a fight! Either way, welcome!

What better way to start blogging about veganism than this?! Veganism is a concept that is often misunderstood by many people-but it’s not as bad as it may sound, I promise! We tend to get a bad rep from a small number of extremists attacking everyone on twitter that even thinks about eating meat! But I am here to tell you that not all vegans are fire breathing dragons, a lot of us are actually good people trying to peacefully spread our message!

So before we get started with anything-I think we first have to define what it means to be vegan!

Vegan: A vegetarian who omits all animal products from their diet

Well…that wasn’t very helpful! What the heck is a vegetarian?!

Vegetarian: A person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.

Dictionary.com-get your sh*t together!! Now, if you have a different defintion of veganism, totally cool! But here is my personal definition of veganism:

“A person who omits all animals and all foods derived from animals from their diet”

Simple enough?

So now that we understand veganism, let’s talk about the different types of veganism!

Ethical Veganism

So ya know that cute little puppy you just adopted? I think killing him is just as wrong as killing a chicken.

Yup. I know what you’re thinking…”Crazy hipsters these days…” But just hear me out please!

I, along with many ethical vegans believe that all life is equal. Us ethical vegans believe that no animal should be tortured and/or killed for human benefit to any degree. Now, before you try to make a joke about it, we don’t hold a funeral for every ant we accidentally step on or walk everywhere because tires have animal byproducts in them. Veganism is about doing everything to avoid animal products, but there are some things that are virtually impossible to avoid.

So many people have said to me “Oh! So if slaughtering houses are more humane, would you eat meat?”

I feel safe saying that all ethical vegans would say “no.”. You see, it’s not the way that the animal is killed, its the fact that they are killed in the first place that we find wrong.

Many ethical vegans don’t buy fur, leather, cashmere, etc because of the harm it causes animals.

If you are interested in learning about this from a philosophical standpoint, I really suggest you do some reading on Peter Singer! He has great views on ethical veganism.

Health Vegans

Veganism-if done correctly-can bring about COUNTLESS health benefits. Veganism reduces your risk for cancer and cure/improve type 2 diabetes, cataracts, arthritis and more! It will increase your lifespan. Veganism can lower the blood pressure of those who have high blood pressure, and it will clear up acne!

Many people who go vegan for health reasons don’t stay vegan for their whole life-but this isn’t a requirement!

NOW BEFORE YOU ASK: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE STICK THIN TO BE VEGAN!

In fact, most of the vegans I’ve met, including myself, are quite average sized!

It’s all about what you put into your body. If you are a vegan who only eats fruits and veggies, you’re 100% going to lose some weight. But if you eat vegan donuts all day, weight loss is not a guarantee!

Vegan for the Planet

I feel super passionate about this cause, so I am going to write a whole post about it in the near future! So for now, I am just going to give you a brief overview.

Eating meat-primarily beef-is destroying the plant. 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions are linked to livestock production(conservationmag.org). Crazy! Livestock production takes up so much land and food. Without livestock production, so much land would be avalible.

NOW

I am not saying if you’re vegan, you have to fit into one of these categories. Personally, I feel that I am vegan for all of these reasons equally! I just made up these groups because I feel that they do a great job at describing the different types of vegans-but I’m sure there are loads more reasons out there!

So there ya go! That is why people go vegan! I really hope you enjoyed reading! I will be doing WAY more in depth to all of these issues very soon, so stay tuned for more posts! In the mean time check out my social media links to stay updated!
