How to Wake Up Early

I felt about 900 people see this title, roll their eyes, and keep scrolling. But PLEASE! Don’t do that! At least hear me out!

Waking up early is such a game changer when it comes to productivity. I am honestly in such a better head space when I am able to wake up early and get shit done. But before I go any further, let’s define what early is.

Now I suppose, this is up to every individual person. But I know for me, if I were to wake up at 5 am every day, I would be the most unpleasant, grouchy human on this earth. If you are the type of person who is happiest when they wake up early, then good for you. I am so incredibly envious. But I am not that person. After some trial and error, I have realized that 8 am is the perfect time for me.

So without any further rambling, let’s get into this!

Create a Night Routine

One key aspect to successfully waking up is ending your day the right way. We all have things that help us chill out after a long day. Some people like meditating, some people like reading, some people like writing. Find the thing that helps you relax and stick to it. Do it every single night right before you go to bed.

Personally, I like to shower and then read before I go to bed. I find showering relaxes me and reading puts me into a clear head space before going to bed.

YOU NEED EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP

When I first realized the importance of waking up early, I kind of ignored this little detail. I would stay out until 4 am, and then get up with my 8 am alarm. This my friends is not healthy and quite frankly defeats the whole point of waking up early. You may think that you can live on only 3 hours of sleep a night, but after a few weeks you’re going to crash so fucking hard. Not getting enough sleep can put you in an awful mood. So be sure you get your 8 hours friends!

STOP SNOOZING

If you know me at all, you know that I used to be the QUEEN of snooze. When I was in high school. I used to have to be awake at 6:45 am to be ready in time for class. My first alarm was set for 5 am and I would hit snooze until 6:45 am. THIS. IS. SO. BAD. Not only does this not allow you to get the full amount of sleep that you have time for, it will guarantee a bad mood when you wake up. Personally, the sound of my alarm makes me homicidal, so hearing it over 20 times doesn’t exactly put me in the best mood.

One good way to avoid this is using a sleep cycle device/app to wake you up at the best time. I personally use the app call Sleep Cycle and I have found it to be the best. You leave it open overnight and it tracks your sleep. Then, you put in a time to be woken up at and it’ll wake you up within 15 minutes of that time. So for example, if you need to be awake at 8, it will wake you up between 7:45 and 8:15, based on when you are in the lightest phase of sleep. I personally find this to be so accurate and really help me to wake up using one alarm(plus there is still a snooze option for mornings that you just can’t deal)

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward to

Maybe I’m just a huge nerd and no one can relate, but I look forward to my morning routine every single day. Whether it’s your daily routine or just brushing your teeth, give yourself something to get out of bed for! Sometimes the hardest part of starting the day isn’t waking up, but getting out of bed. Give yourself a little treat everyday to motivate yourself

That’s all for today everyone! Thank you so much for reading and I really hope this helped you in some way. If you have any other tips or comments, please leave me a comment!

Love, K.

  1. I always get up early, usually between 6-7. Almost never snooze. Morning routine is key to my success. I need some rote behavior while I’m still waking up. Up, dressed, coffee, dog’s water bowl. Every day. Once I’ve had my coffee it’s game on for the day!

    Great post. Keep them coming!
